Holiday rentals in the Luberon: book scam-free with a local agency in Lourmarin

A stone house with a pool, views over the Luberon, the Friday morning market in Lourmarin. Booking that dream now takes three clicks on a platform. But behind the perfect photo, there is sometimes a house that does not exist, or rules that change after you have booked.

In 2026, booking a holiday online calls for more caution than ever. Here is what is really happening on the big platforms, and why going through a local agency remains the safest way to rent in the Luberon.

Fake listings: even the big platforms are overwhelmed

Holiday rental scams are no longer crude fake listings. Fraudsters now hack the accounts of genuine owners on Booking.com and change the payment details. The listing is real, so are the reviews: only the money goes somewhere else.

A few recent facts:

  • Booking.com says it removed 26,000 fake listings in 2025.
  • In summer 2026, dozens of tourists fell for ghost apartments in Paris. Booking’s head of fraud publicly admitted it “should not have happened”.
  • As early as June 2024, Booking acknowledged a 500% to 900% rise in travel scam attempts over 18 months.
  • On 21 October 2026, the European Commission opened formal proceedings against Booking.com under the Digital Services Act (DSA) over how it handles fraudulent listings and phishing.

Artificial intelligence makes these listings even more convincing: retouched photos, flawless descriptions, persuasive messages. Being a careful traveller is no longer enough to spot the trap.

Rules that change at the platforms’ whim

On a platform, neither you nor the owner sets the rules: the platform does, and it changes them whenever it likes. Airbnb gave two examples in 2026.

  • Fees. Since 13 October 2026 in France, Airbnb takes 15.5% of the booking amount, cleaning included, directly from the host. Many hosts are adjusting their prices accordingly, and some already say they will raise their cleaning fees to compensate.
  • House rules. For bookings made from 20 November 2026, Airbnb strictly limits what hosts can ask: no more mandatory washing-up, stripping beds or taking out the bins at check-out, and no penalty for a task left undone. Rules outside the dedicated section of the listing can no longer be enforced. For real damage, the host must go through Airbnb’s Resolution Centre within 14 days.

These changes come from good intentions. But they show one thing: on a platform, the terms of your stay depend on rules nobody negotiates, which shift from one season to the next, and whose costs owners often pass on in the price. If something goes wrong, you deal with a remote customer service team, not with someone who knows the house.

Booking with Air Property Provence: an agency, an address, real people

Air Property Provence is the Agence Sud Luberon, in the heart of Lourmarin: the oldest estate agency in the village, established in 1976 in a former carriage house. We manage around twenty holiday homes in the Luberon. Here is what that means for you.

On a platform With Air Property Provence
Listing posted by a stranger, sometimes hacked Every house is visited, known and managed by the agency
Payment through links or messages that can be hijacked Payment to a licensed estate agency holding a professional card and a financial guarantee
Rules set and changed by the platform A clear rental agreement, signed before your stay, that does not change along the way
Service fees and commissions added to the price A detailed price from the quote: rent, cleaning, tourist tax, security deposit
Remote customer service if something goes wrong An agency a few minutes away, which knows the house and its owners

In short: you know who you are talking to, where the house is, and what you are paying. You can even drop by the agency, 5 rue Henri de Savornin, in Lourmarin.

Our professional card:

How to spot a fraudulent listing: 7 checks

Wherever you book, these checks take ten minutes and can save your holiday.

  1. Too good to be true. A villa with a pool in the Luberon in July at half the market price is a red flag.
  2. Payment off the platform. Never pay by bank transfer to a foreign account, or through a link received by email or WhatsApp.
  3. Pressure. “Three other families are interested, pay today”: a classic pressure tactic.
  4. Photos. Run a reverse image search. The same photos on another listing, in another town, give the fraud away.
  5. Address. Check that the house exists on a map and in satellite view.
  6. Contact. Ask for a phone call. A genuine owner or agency will be happy to talk.
  7. Professional status. For an agency, check its professional card and financial guarantee, which must appear on its website and contracts.
